Expanding Horizons
The Pine Ridge Reservation
Join us in Making a Difference
Keep in mind...
We aim to bring well-planned and high-quality workshops to children on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Our programs thrive off of a team with a diverse set of skills, interests, and talents. Teaching experience is valuable but by no means required. Volunteers will be trained through our pre-program preparation.
With that said, we have three requirements:
1) a commitment of your time for planning and running your workshop
2) an open-mindedness to learning about the community's history and culture. The purpose of this is to gain cultural sensitivity in order to connect with the children.
3) an effort to be the best role model you can be to the children.
The age range of the Kids Program we will be leading is approx. 5-13 years old. Our volunteers are of high school age, but a few exceptional middle schoolers may be considered. The minimum age to join and volunteer is 12 years old.
Creativity is encouraged when designing engaging learning experiences for the Kids Program! We are open to workshops in a variety of fields.

While we try to minimize fees as much as possible, there are a few fees that are necessary. Here is the breakdown:

1. Boarding: $35/person/day. This would total to $245/week/person. All of the money will be paid to the Pine Ridge Reconciliation Center. Visit their page to learn more about their work: Our Ministries - PINE RIDGE RECONCILIATION CENTER

2. Food: Each week, the group will split the cost of food. This usually averages to $10-15/person/day. As a group, we will purchase groceries together and cook for ourselves.

3. Workshop Materials: It is up to the individual to cover the cost of their workshop's materials. However, Diversity Matters and Youth4Difference will reserve a budget to help cover material fees, depending on the situation. We encourage volunteers to host supply drives and fundraisers to ensure they have what they need.

4. Transportation: The prices vary from season to season, so no accurate estimate for the flight is available at the moment. Rental car fees are split between each group. Transportation will be discussed once the flight information is released. We will facilitate group travel as much as possible to reduce transportation costs. Common traveling options are:
- Fly from CA to Denver, then take connection flight from Denver to Rapid City (the Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorials are within 30 minutes from the Rapid City Airport). Then, 1.5 hour drive to Pine Ridge.
- Fly from CA to Denver, then drive 5 hours to Pine Ridge
- Drive from CA to Pine Ridge, SD (20 hours)
