2025 Workshop Example:
Doctor Training Camp!

Did you know that Red Cross does not currently offer CPR classes on the Pine Ridge Reservation? Opportunities to receive training in life-saving medical skills are extremely limited and often inaccessible. At the same time, Pine Ridge faces serious healthcare access challenges, including a shortage of healthcare workers, even though health emergencies deeply affect many families in the community.

The Lakota people have a rich tradition of herbal medicine, cultural healing, and wholistic care. This 5-day Doctor Training Camp was held to give students hands-on practice with life-saving skills such as Stop the Bleed, CPR/AED use, wound care, taking manual pulses, and using a sphygmomanometer to measure blood pressure. We also incorporated words from Lakota language as students reflected on the values that make a good doctor.

During our discussions and skills practice, many children shared how health emergencies and personal losses have shaped their lives. They spoke about wanting to help their families, protect their community, and bring healing to their homes and community — whether as future doctors, nurses, first responders, teachers, or simply as people prepared to care for others in moments of need.

Summer Workshops

From speaking with tribal and community leaders, we learned that one of the best ways we can help is through creating opportunities for kids to discover their interests and expand their vision for what their future may hold. Every summer, we host around a dozen different workshops, and work with each volunteer to design these activities in unique and creative ways tailored to the interests and needs of the children in the Kids Program. We invite you to take inspiration from the workshops featured below when crafting your own!
